I am Brenna Liebold, a board-certified music therapist with additional certifications in sleep science and stress management coaching. Pleased to meet you!
I love to "figure out" musical instruments, a curiosity passed down from both of my grandfathers. When the physical attributes of an instrument and music theory meld, it unveils the instrument's secrets to manifesting its flow of tones and rhythms. That's why, to me, the visual aesthetic of a well-made instrument equals the beauty of the music it weaves.
During nearly 18 years as a music therapist, one of my most enjoyable challenges has been making music creation accessible to all ages and abilities. I teach music with creative flexibility that ensures ease, quick successes, and personalized enjoyment. Sometimes this means physically altering an instrument. More often, though, I adapt traditional pedagogy to meet the needs of the would-be musician.

how exactly does an online ukulele bootcamp work?
Ooooooh, you're in for a treat! To keep things simple, once you enroll and submit payment, you'll get an email receipt with a link to join the super awesome private Facebook group: Play in a Day Ukulele Bootcamp. Over the next few weeks in the Facebook group, bonus video trainings and other resources will be posted to ensure your ukuleleing (probably not a real word) success. Now, your Facebook feed doesn't guarantee you'll catch these new posts, so you'll also get an email notification with a link directly to the latest goody (about once per week). That way, you won't have to dig around the group to find it. That's also how you'll get each of the (3) bonuses when they're released: the Jam Track Pack, Play It Pentatonic guide, and "Restring It to Bring It" video. Again, when it's time to go live with the bootcamp trainings, either go to the Facebook group directly, or click the link delivered to your email. Either way, once you've clicked to join the live bootcamp session, the chat box will be open for questions and comments. What will I learn over the course of the ukulele bootcamp?
By the end of the bootcamp, you will be able to play the chords to any of your favorite artist's songs, whether you want to sing them yourself or accompany a recording. To meet this goal, you'll learn:
how does this bootcamp compare to traditional ukulele lessons or classes?
Traditional classes and lessons focus on mastery of playing an instrument and general music training over a long period of time. For some students, this pursuit lasts a lifetime. The ukulele bootcamp will provide neither formal music instruction nor traditional playing methods. This type of training introduces adaptations that allow you to access "advanced" music skills more quickly. The benefit of this approach is that you stay motivated to play with fewer of the frustrations that commonly cause students to quit. You're more likely to incorporate music and the ukulele into your life. You also get to play the music you love instead of the music your instructor picks to teach a specific technique. There's no excuse for that ukulele to sit in the closet collecting dust anymore! who is the instructor and what are her teaching qualifications?
Brenna Liebold has been providing individual and group voice, piano, guitar, ukulele, and a smattering of other instrumental lessons to both children and adults for no less than 20 years. Close to 18 of those years have been spent serving others as a board-certified music therapist as well. Brenna received formal music and music therapy education at Concordia University of Wisconsin and Alverno College respectively. Additional training in sleep science and stress management coaching, mindfulness, breathwork, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy followed. A replay of each training will be posted in the private Facebook group for you to view at your convenience. Feel free to post questions in the group as well if you need additional help at any time. If i have long fingers or big hands, will i be able to play a ukulele comfortably?
Yes! It all depends on the ukulele you choose. Among the types of ukuleles appropriate for this bootcamp, soprano and concert ones are the smallest. Tenor ukuleles are longer overall, by about five inches, and the strings are spaced further apart. You may find this ukulele much more accommodating. The only way to know for sure which ukulele is most comfortable is to visit a physical store (or two) and test each type. |
can I attend the ukulele bootcamp if i've never played an instrument before?
You bet! That's the best part of the Play in a Day Ukulele Bootcamp. All instruction is provided with non-musicians in mind. If you've had some musical training in the past, you'll still learn to play the ukulele. Everyone will learn to make music on this instrument in record time, regardless of their history with music-making. can i use a tenor or baritone ukulele instead of soprano or concert during the bootcamp?
Since the tuning of each string on a tenor ukulele is the same as soprano and concert, you may use a tenor ukulele during this bootcamp. Although the strings are tuned differently, you might be able to use a baritone ukulele if you tune them like the other ukuleles. A warning if you attempt this: you risk breaking the strings! Unless you're confident you have super stretchy strings on your instrument, it's not recommended to use a baritone ukulele for this bootcamp. what if I have questions during or after one of the bootcamp sessions?
Since all live trainings will be held in a private Facebook group, you can type your comments and questions in the chat box for your instructor to see and respond. Outside of the live trainings, post questions directly in the Facebook group. Someone may have the same question as you, so posting to the entire group helps your fellow bootcampers as well. Another feature in the Facebook group is video chat rooms. This is a great place to interact visually with your instructor if you need "face-to-face" help with a ukulele skill that's giving you trouble. You might also want to organize jam sessions with other bootcamp attendees. can i participate in the ukulele bootcamp with a friend?
Absolutely! Just be sure that individuals outside of your household enroll separately. He/she will require a separate set of training materials and Facebook group access to watch videos and live training replays. Consider your enrollment as including a "family pass." Above and beyond that, please respect the time, organization, and skills that your instructor brings to the ukulele bootcamp. can i share my access to the private facebook group or training materials/downloads?
Follow the golden rule of the internet: if you wouldn't do it in person, don't do it online. You wouldn't bring a friend to spin class without paying the fee, right? So don't do it for an online class. That said, members of your household are welcome to share a "family pass" experience since the technology and resources are likely to be shared due to proximity. Please note that the number of download attempts for all course materials is capped to prevent misuse. All course materials are copyrighted. That means distributing any of the bootcamp materials violates copyright law. If you love the ukulele bootcamp enough to want to share, tell others about how they can enroll as well. Love it. Live it. Music. reserves the right to revoke your access to the Facebook group and all supplemental materials without a refund in the event of misuse of these resources. What is the refund policy for the ukulele bootcamp?
Once the bootcamp is officially underway on February 18th, refunds will not be issued due to the non-returnable and non-revokable nature of some of the bonus items and online learning environment. |
